Polyaluminum chloride (PAC) is a high-efficiency inorganic polymer coagulant used in drinking water purification, wastewater treatment, papermaking, textile processing, and chemical manufacturing. Although PAC powder dissolves quickly and forms strong flocs, its fine particle size and hygroscopic nature cause dust, caking, and material loss during manual handling. Therefore, a fully enclosed pneumatic conveying system is recommended to transfer PAC powder safely from bags, bulk bags, or silos to storage hoppers, dissolving tanks, or dosing equipment.
Pneumatic conveying moves PAC powder through a sealed pipeline using a controlled stream of air. In a positive-pressure system, a blower or compressor feeds air into the pipe, and a rotary airlock or pressure tank introduces the powder. The powder is pushed to a receiving filter or storage bin, where it is separated from the air. In a vacuum system, the blower creates suction that pulls the powder from a feeding point to a collection vessel. Both arrangements prevent dust escape, reduce manual handling, and permit flexible pipe routing around the plant.
A complete PAC conveying system includes a bag tipping station or bulk bag unloader, rotary airlock, blow tank, root blower or compressor, conveying pipelines, bend fittings, diverter valves, reverse-pulse filter receiver, silo vent filter, safety relief valve, and PLC control panel. The PLC controls the start and stop sequence, filter cleaning, valve position, pressure signals, and dosing time. All components are selected for abrasion resistance and anti-static operation. The system can be programmed for continuous or batch transfer, and can feed one or multiple destinations automatically.
Designing a conveying line for PAC powder requires attention to bulk density, particle shape, moisture content, distance, and required capacity. The normal bulk density of PAC powder is between 500 and 900 kg/m3. Fine PAC dust is easily fluidized, while coarse granules require a slightly higher conveying velocity. If the air is wet, the powder can stick to pipe walls and form blockages. Our engineers size the pipe diameter, blower capacity, air velocity, and material-to-air ratio to ensure smooth transfer. Air dryers and moisture separators are recommended in humid areas.
Dilute-phase conveying is often used for PAC powder at moderate capacity and short conveying distances. It is simple and economical but consumes more air and causes faster pipe wear. Dense-phase conveying uses high pressure and low velocity to move the powder in plugs. It reduces component wear and is better for long-distance or high-capacity applications. The correct system type is selected by analyzing the on-site conditions, the available installation space, and the customer's operation requirements. This minimizes energy consumption and maintenance while ensuring reliable delivery.
