Pharmaceutical starch is a critical excipient in tablets, capsules, and powders. It must be transferred gently and hygienically without dust escape or contamination. Pneumatic conveying provides a closed, automatic, and clean method for moving starch from receiving to storage, blending, and processing. This approach improves operator safety, reduces manual work, and supports GMP compliance.

A successful system starts with material analysis. Starch bulk density, particle size, moisture, and flowability affect pipe size, air velocity, and pressure. Because starch is cohesive, the feeding device and receiver must be carefully selected to prevent blockages. Conveying velocity is set low enough to reduce attrition but high enough to keep powder moving steadily.

Two main conveying modes are dilute phase and dense phase. Dilute phase uses high air speed to suspend starch and is economical for short distances. Dense phase moves starch in low-velocity plugs, reducing particle damage and energy use. The right mode depends on throughput, distance, and product sensitivity. A blend of both modes can be implemented for optimum performance.

Vacuum conveying suits multiple pickup points and bag dumping stations. It keeps the work area dust-free because leaks pull air inward. Positive pressure conveying is preferred for longer distances and distribution to several silos or process machines. The system can be customized with rotary valves, blow-through adapters, and diverter valves to match the plant layout and capacity.

All contact parts are made from stainless steel, usually SS304 or SS316L. Internal surfaces are polished to prevent powder build-up and ease cleaning. Sanitary flanges, quick-release clamps, and CIP/SIP connections allow thorough cleaning between batches. The design avoids dead zones and horizontal sections where starch can collect.

Dust control is an essential feature. The enclosed conveying line prevents starch dust from entering the production room, protecting workers and reducing explosion risk. Grounding dissipates static electricity, and optional explosion relief panels or suppression systems can be added. The exhaust air is filtered to capture fine starch while keeping pressure drop low.

Automation provides consistent operation. A PLC and touch panel control the blowers, rotary valves, filters, and vacuum pumps in the correct sequence. Operators can save recipes for different starch grades, monitor line pressure, and view alarms. Data logging supports traceability and connection to an ERP system for complete batch records.

Material handling is simplified from bulk bag discharge to the final process vessel. Starch enters the conveying line through a bag discharging station or rotary valve and travels to a receiver, silo, or blender. At the destination, a dust collector separates starch from air. This continuous flow eliminates manual carrying and improves production efficiency.

To protect product quality, the system minimizes degradation and segregation. Large-radius bends reduce particle impact, and low conveying velocities prevent breakage. If starch is blended with active ingredients, gentle mixing and accurate feeding preserve homogeneity. Vacuum loading from bins and intermediate containers also maintains the original particle structure.

A reliable manufacturer delivers a complete engineered solution. The provider should perform material testing, process design, fabrication, installation, and commissioning. Documentation, validation, operator training, and responsive after-sales service are essential. A well-maintained system with scheduled checks of filters, valves, and seals ensures long service life and consistent pharmaceutical starch production.
