Lithium battery powders are often micron-sized, low-density and sensitive to oxygen, moisture and impact. In ordinary pneumatic conveying, particles may collide with pipe walls, create electrostatic charges and form explosive dust clouds. If oxygen is present, even a small ignition source can cause fire or explosion. Therefore, nitrogen was selected as the conveying gas. The N2-protected conveying system replaced air with nitrogen, keeping the oxygen concentration below the safe limit and preventing oxidation and dust explosion. This is particularly important for cathode, anode and conductive additive materials used in lithium battery production.
The Kharkiv plant needed to transfer powder from unpacking stations to storage hoppers and process bins. The route included horizontal pipelines, vertical lifts and bends. Headpowder’s engineers performed material testing, pressure drop calculations and pipeline layout design. The system adopted dilute-phase pressure conveying with a rotary airlock feeder, a dedicated filter receiver and PLC-based automation. The powder flow was stable, with low particle breakage and minimal residue in the pipeline. The conveying capacity and distance were optimized according to the customer’s actual process requirements.
Safety is the core of this project. The system works in a closed nitrogen loop. After the powder is separated in the receiving hopper, the nitrogen is returned to the blower inlet, which reduces gas consumption and prevents dust emission. An oxygen analyzer continuously monitors the loop; if the oxygen level rises above the preset limit, the system automatically purges with nitrogen, stops feeding and issues an alarm. Explosion-proof electrical components, antistatic filter media, grounding devices and pressure relief valves are installed. These measures ensure safe operation during loading, conveying and discharging of sensitive lithium battery powder.
This case is an excellent reference for Eastern Europe. The project helped the Ukrainian customer improve production safety and product quality while reducing nitrogen consumption and maintenance costs.
