Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) is a versatile powdered excipient used across pharmaceuticals, food, and cosmetics. It needs careful handling during transfer and processing. Pneumatic conveying offers enclosed, contamination-free transport. However, MCC's cohesive nature and low bulk density require a customized solution to avoid blockages and degradation.

MCC particles can bridge, pack, or attract static charge when moisture changes. Particle size and shape affect flowability. Proper design starts with material testing. Bulk density, angle of repose, moisture content, and cohesion must be measured to select the correct conveying mode and velocity.

Dilute phase conveying uses high air velocity to suspend particles and suits short distances. Dense phase conveying uses low velocity and pressure to move material as plugs. It minimizes attrition and suits fragile MCC granules. Mode choice depends on distance, capacity, and material.

A complete system includes a feeder, air supply, pipeline, receiver, dust collector, and controls. Positive pressure pushes material from one source to several destinations. Negative pressure pulls material from multiple sources to one collection point. Every component must match MCC's abrasiveness and particle integrity.

Blowers or compressors supply conveying air. The air must be dry and filtered to prevent moisture absorption. Velocity must be optimized: too low causes blockages, too high damages particles and wears pipes. Variable frequency drives adjust speed and pressure to protect product.

Pipeline layout matters. Horizontal and vertical sections need different velocities and pressure drops. Long-radius bends, smooth interiors, and wear-resistant pipes reduce wear and degradation. Pipe diameter and length determine capacity and pressure loss. Tapered pipelines maintain optimal velocity as pressure decreases.

Dust collection is essential. A high-efficiency filter or cartridge collector cleans air leaving the receiver. Pulse-jet cleaning prevents dust emissions. HEPA filtration is often required for pharmaceutical and food plants. Collected powder can return to the process to reduce waste.

Feeding must be consistent. Rotary valves with tight clearances and anti-bridging designs handle cohesive MCC. A speed-controlled screw feeder may be gentler. The hopper should have a steep cone, polished surface, and vibration aids for mass flow.

MCC absorbs moisture, causing caking. Conveying air must be dehydrated. Silo breathers or nitrogen purging help in humid climates. Nitrogen can be the conveying gas when moisture control is critical. Drying between batches is essential.

Customization is key. We evaluate floor space, headroom, equipment, and future expansion. Simulations verify design. Controls range from manual to PLC with remote monitoring. A custom solution reduces contamination, labor, and downtime while improving safety and product quality.

We have installed MCC systems for tablet making, powder blending, capsule filling, and packaging. Direct compression and wet granulation lines benefit from our approach. Services include material testing, design, fabrication, commissioning, training, and support. Contact us for a customized pneumatic conveying solution.
